Good managers know that happy employees are loyal, productive employees. Below are seven areas to improve employee satisfaction.

Employee attitudes typically reflect the moral of the company. In areas of customer service and sales, happy employees are extremely important because they represent the company to the public. Satisfaction, however, is not linked solely to compensation. Sure, a raise or benefits will probably improve employee contentment, at least temporarily, but small, inexpensive changes can have a long-term impact.

Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh’s book Delivering Happiness suggests that employers should follow the science of happiness. The book stresses the importance of happy employees. Since the publication of this New York Times Best Seller, Hsieh has expanded his message from to a bus tour to an entire movement.

On her happiness project blog, Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, identifies seven areas to improve happiness in the workplace. While employees can tweak their habits to improve happiness, employers can also make small changes to the seven categories. A little bit of effort can lead to happy, efficient, and loyal employees.

Give Employees More Control

“Happiness is affected by [employee's] sense of control over their lives,” says Rubin.

Employers should look for ways to give employees more control over their schedules, environment, and/or work habits. For instance, employers could offer alternative work schedules such as flextime or telecommuting. Today’s employees have demanding schedules outside of work, and many workers appreciate a boss who considers work-life balance. Because every person’s obligations outside of work are different, customized schedules are a great way to improve employee satisfaction.

Employers should also encourage employees to customize their workstations. This could include décor and/or equipment. This not only gives employees control over their work environments, but it can ease personal barriers such as back pain or eyestrain. In addition, studies show that certain colors or décor can improve happiness. Employees will be able to create a place they enjoy working in rather than being stuck in a bland office cubicle.

Another way to give employees a sense of control is to create employee-driven competitions such as sales competitions. These activities put employees in control of their success. Each employee can set personal goals, and they will feel a sense of accomplishment rather than obligation.

Ease Commuting Stress

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 86.5% of workers over the age of 16 drive to work, whether carpooling or driving alone.

“Bad commutes are a major source of unhappiness. People feel frustrated, powerless, and stressed,” states Rubin.

Employers should consider ways to decrease commuting stress. For instance, employers could stagger work times to avoid heavy traffic. Review beginning and ending times and determine if the specific times or the amount of people arriving at each time can be adjusted. In addition, review late arrival policies. If employees are severely reprimanded for arriving late, they will be much more stressed during a bad commute and will arrive at the office miserable.

Another possibility is to offer telecommuting options. This eliminates the necessity of commuting and allows employees to work where they are most comfortable. Telecommuting also has a variety of benefits for the employer such as reduced costs.

Stop Wasting Time

Tight deadlines are another major sources of stress for many employees. Employers can ease this stress by freeing up more time. For instance, employers can make meetings shorter and more efficient. Consider tricks that sound silly but are actually effective such as having a meeting with no chairs. People will be more likely to stick to the necessary agenda when they have to stand the entire meeting.

Whenever possible, substitute conference calls for meetings. To reduce unnecessary chitchat, make calls before lunchtime or at the end of the day. People will want to cut to the chase, so they can go to lunch or get home.

Another idea is to create organizational systems that improve efficiency. Clutter and confusion are major time zappers. Organized offices and systems ease stress, save time, and increase productivity.

Encourage Social Connections

Socialization is a key component of happiness. “Interacting with others gives people a boost in mood – surprisingly, this is true even for introverts,” writes Rubin.

Employers should find ways to encourage social relations. Consider an office arrangement that fosters communication. Arrange workstations so employees can see each other and talk.

Employers can also encourage office celebrations for holidays and birthdays. These celebrations do not need to be expensive. It can be as simple as asking everyone to bring in a covered dish. Even when there is no reason to celebrate, encourage employees to eat lunch together. Provide a comfortable eating area.

Socialization is not limited to office hours. Encourage out of office socialization such as volunteer programs. This gives employees a change to develop relationships outside of the office while promoting the company in a positive way. Community service is a great way to build a positive reputation, and it is a happiness booster for employees.

“Those who work to further causes they value tend to be happier and healthier, experience fewer aches and pains, and even live longer,” says Rubin.

Promote Good Health

Poor health is not only damaging to employees, it is detrimental to businesses. “Corporations pay a heavy cost for stress-related illnesses, such as hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, and substance abuse,” says Rubin.

“Up to 90% of all doctor visits in the United States are for stress-related illnesses,” according to Dr. Mehet Oz of the Dr. Oz Show.

Chronic stress has a variety of negative side effects such as weight gain, lower immune system, increased risk of disease, and fatigue. Employers should encourage employees to reduce stress levels and improve their overall health.

The first step is to educate employees on health topics. Provide reading materials or offer seminars. People can’t make positive changes if they don’t know what to change.

Once employees know about health topics such as stress, exercising, and healthy eating, start a health related competition such as the Biggest Loser. This offers employees motivation and a support system. If the entire office is involved, employees will be more likely to accomplish their goals.

To help employees make positive lifestyle changes, have a kitchen equipped with a refrigerator and microwave to prepare healthy meals. Research shows that preparing food is healthier than eating out. Also, encourage breaks throughout the day. Even small amounts of exercise throughout the day are beneficial.

According to Dr. Oz, “Exercise releases serotonin and dopamine, the feel-good hormones that become blocked during stress. Walking stairs is a great workout. One study showed that walking stairs 7 minutes a day reduces the risk of heart disease by two-thirds.”

If possible, offer a company discount on gym memberships. This will encourage employees to make positive choices outside of the office and to exercise regularly.

Create an Atmosphere of Growth

Jobs are more than a source of income. Jobs are a venue for employees to grow and learn. In a survey about employee motivation, employees ranked job characteristics that motivated them. Surprisingly, high wages and promotion were not in the top three. Instead, the number one desire was “Full Appreciation of Work Being Done.”

Employers can create an atmosphere of growth by providing training, acknowledging benchmarks, and celebrating accomplishments. Employers should also encourage employees to take risks and learn new skills. Employees will become bored and lose motivation if they are never given an opportunity to expand their skills and responsibilities.

Break Up Routines

Surprises add spark to all areas of life, including the workplace. “Even a small treat can boost people’s happiness – and people get a bigger kick from an unexpected pleasure,” says Rubin.

Employers should look for small ways to surprise employees. For instance, you can occasionally bring in a special treat such as coffee or baked goods. Small gestures show employees that you appreciate their time.

Another idea is to host an office party for a quirky holiday. Employers could even allow employees to create a holiday. Again, this does not need to be expensive. The keys are breaking up the routine of the workweek, promoting socialization, and demonstrating your appreciation.

Also consider an office give-away. You can hold a raffle or competition to motivate employees. The prize can be as simple as a gift card or as extravagant as a vacation.

If you don’t think you need to improve employee satisfaction, read all the comments from dissatisfying employees on message boards such as Yahoo.

One user states, “I believe companies want good employees that work hard and are loyal but they will never get this because of the way they treat their employees.”

Prove these disgruntled employees wrong. Be the best boss you can be and strive to improve happiness in the workplace. Your extra effort may just lead to a better a business.

More people are likely to engage in “risky work behavior” than ever before, according a new survey.

Nearly seven out of 10 adult office workers use their computers and other office technology for personal reasons, often ignoring employer policies that warn against doing so, new research shows.

Sixty-nine percent of office workers admit that they access the Internet at work for non-work purposes, and the same percentage uses their work telephone to make and receive personal calls, according to a recent survey conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Lawyers.com. In addition, 55 percent of the 1,711 respondents said that they send and receive personal e-mail on their work accounts.

Despite the routine misuse, 45 percent of office workers say they have been informed that their technology usage at work is monitored. “It’s not a mystery to most employees that their bosses may be reading their work e-mails or checking out websites they visit on work computers,” Alan Kopit, an attorney and legal editor for Lawyers.com, said in a statement.

The survey results show that employees are more willing to engage in what Kopit calls “risky work behavior” than ever before. Approximately three out of four, or 73 percent, of office workers are as or more likely to use the Internet for personal reasons than they were two years ago.

The percentage of office workers conducting personal business at the office is even higher among young employees. Nearly 72 percent of workers ages 18 to 24 said they check personal e-mail accounts at work (compared to 61 percent of the general population), and 77 percent are using the Internet personally (compared to 69 percent of workers overall), the survey says. Seventy-one percent of the young respondents said they maintain some sort of personal website. Personal blogs are the most popular among young workers, while 52 percent use networking accounts, such as MySpace or Facebook. Thirteen percent of workers 18 to 24 have an online dating account that they use at work, survey results show.

Experts say these percentages make young workers even more vulnerable to personal exposure at work. “We’ve seen instances where current or potential employers reviewed content of personal websites, and held employees accountable in different ways for what they post,” Kopit said. “Young people tend to live lives very openly online, which may have unintended repercussions when it comes to their employment.”

Employee violations of technology usage policies can not only hurt the productivity of businesses, but in some cases could compromise the security of their communications systems. Kopit advises employers to evaluate their current practices regarding technology and to take the necessary steps to implement systems that will ensure their business is protected.

Despite the proliferation of security products, the quantity and magnitude of high-profile data leaks continue to rise. With this increase in information leakage comes a higher data breach cost.
According to a Ponemon Institute study, data breach incidents cost U.S. companies US$202 per compromised customer record in 2008, compared to US$197 in 2007. The average total per-incident cost in 2008 was US$6.7 million, compared US$6.3 million in 2007.
Even though data leakage has become a mainstream problem, the number of companies that have bought and adopted data leakage prevention (DLP) technologies remains small. Is DLP at a standstill or is it at crossroads?

Not just about infrastructure

There is a huge misconception that organizations can just add another piece of infrastructure to solve data leakage problems. Securing the network connection is an important step, of course, but this usually does not result in truly improving the overall security of what enterprises care about–sensitive data.
In fact, today’s networks and applications were designed without taking into account the overall security of information. The connectivity of “all” business networks to each other through the Internet was never in fact designed with that in mind–it just happened.
As such, the infrastructure actually has no context for what the exchange of information means, leaving many gaps in network security.
In our highly connected world, multiple applications can access the same data. It is not surprising if the number of entry and exit points of an organization’s network far exceeds the number of machines or even users.
Just take a look around us. There are laptops, servers, smart phones, mobile phones, social networks–all these are potential leakage points. Also, the lack of awareness by computer users often results in important information “leaving” the organization.
Compounding this problem is that personal information is usually stored on multiple networks running multiple policies, without any control from the information “owner”. Entities that hold consumer information are not necessarily savvy when it comes to IT or to information security issues. Their only objective is to satisfy regulations.
The number of access points is further increased when companies engage in contract work and off shoring activities. In the 2009 Ponemon Institute study, third-party organizations accounted for more than 44 percent of data breach cases in 2008, and are also the most costly form of data breaches as a result of additional investigation and consulting fees.
Closing one exit point does not provide any value. The organization needs an overall strategy to protect the organization.

Regulations, policies, compliance

To manage the current situation, more regulations are being implemented. As we need ways to measure progress, compliance is a good way to achieve that.
But, this also means that solving the compliance problem is usually the driver for businesses buying security products. Unfortunately, that drives vendors to satisfy regulations rather than actually attempt to solve the problem.
In reality, many PCI-certified businesses are still getting successfully attacked. Hence, implementing regulations can be more expensive than solving the actual problem at hand.
As companies look to address these challenges, they turn to an array of DLP vendors and technologies, only to face exponentially more complexity at every phase of security–from selection to integration to management.
Here’s a quick look at some types of technologies that are presently used:

Network DLP

Network DLP offerings are enterprise tools that manage access to important information. They usually crawl the network and “fingerprint” files and records that contain information of a particular type.
These products are usually able to detect if a particular important file or dataset is being transferred somewhere. However, detecting whether the file is being sent to an authorized location is particularly difficult, unless the DLP application has knowledge of many applications and their expected behaviors.
Network DLP technologies also do not have the capacity to monitor data that are locally managed at an endpoint, such as personal e-mail and mobile device. So, it is difficult to thwart insider threats if the endpoints are not guarded.
At the same time, encrypted data can cause problems if the enterprise does not manage the encryption well.

Endpoint DLP

These are agents or client software that reside at endpoints, such as mobile devices, computer ports, personal e-mail and instant messaging. An agent running on a particular PC can detect if an important file is being transferred out. However, managing the same information across the corporate network or other networks, requires additional infrastructure.
It is important to note that policies at the servers and endpoints are usually different in nature and need different ways to be managed. While the industry has been trying to come up with standards in the policy domain, this may take a long time. As such, different vendors and different departments are likely to still come up with different non-interoperable policies.

Embedded DLP

Can companies deploy a “partial” solution, where only applications that they decide are critical are monitored? And can they have DLP integrated into certain applications so they do not have to build a separate management infrastructure?
The answer lies in embedded DLP.
DLP should be embedded inside the pipe, such as the e-mail system. If companies build applications in a way where DLP is in the middle of the application, they can then implement the policy correctly because they are directly addressing the data flow. The content that is supposed to travel between networks knows where it is supposed to go and who should be given access to the data.
Ultimately, if companies truly want a security angle, it may be better to implement DLP piecemeal in each application.

Overall security strategy

Enterprises need to think about security as a suite of business processes, rather than about implementing a particular technology or two. What is truly needed is a suite of features in existing technologies that provide elements of DLP to help address the problem incrementally over time.
In addition, the management of the chosen technologies requires knowledge and effort.
DLP will not be successful until the industry knows how to describe policies for content independent of where and how the content is accessed.
One business partner can enforce its policy on a transaction as it travels between other partners. A policy can include aspects of access to the information by the partner or others. Embedding policies in content is perhaps the only way to enforce policies across company boundaries.
Enforcing policies will also continue to be difficult in different verticals.
There are regulation-based policies for which businesses such as retail firms, need to ensure credit card and other account data are not leaked. And there are also enterprise policies that are specific to a business, such as a chip manufacturer.
The challenge for security services providers is to provide customers with a good set of templates to build upon, rather than push a product out of the box. Deep experience of an industry segment will also help a lot.
DLP is a very important aspect of managing enterprise networks that host important data. It is possible to focus on critical applications and deploy aspects of DLP without affecting the management of other applications or other parts of the network.
Current technologies and products are going in the right direction, but the overall management remains a challenge.
Efforts need to be coordinated among the various industry groups to streamline and standardize security support. While we are making progress as an industry, a lot more is needed.

What is Firefox Private Browsing?

As you browse the web, Firefox helpfully remembers lots of information for you – sites you’ve visited, files you’ve downloaded and more. However, there may be times when you don’t want other users of your computer to see this information. For example, if you share a computer with someone and have been shopping for their birthday present.

Private Browsing allows you to browse the Internet without saving any information about which sites and pages you’ve visited. Here the following will give you step-by-step instructions for using it.

How to Turn on/off Private Browsing?

To start a Private Browsing session:

1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox menu (Tools menu in Windows XP), and select Start Private Browsing.

2. When you turn on Private Browsing, Firefox will alert you that it will save your current windows and tabs for after you finish using Private Browsing. Click on Start Private Browsing to continue.

3. You will then enter Private Browsing mode, and the Private Browsing information screen will appear. When browsing in Private Browsing mode, the Firefox menu will be purple (for Windows XP the window title will say (Private Browsing) instead) during your session.

To end a Private Browsing session:

1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox menu (Tools menu in Windows XP), and select Stop Private Browsing.

2. The windows and tabs you were using when you enabled Private Browsing will appear, and you can use Firefox normally. The Firefox menu will turn orange again (for Windows XP the Firefox window title will no longer say (Private Browsing)) when Private Browsing is off.

Internet Dangers for Children that Parents Should Know

The Internet is a tool that can be used for good and evil. The Internet Dangers section highlights the primary dangers to kids online with specific focus on the sexual exploitation of children.

Children are much more susceptible to the power of suggestion, and quite often website content does not even need to be particularly suggestive. There is a multitude of sites offering adult or inappropriate content. There are sites that advocate drinking, taking drugs and smoking.

There are even sites that describe how to make bombs out of household items. To some children, the thought of making a bomb is more fun than it is dangerous. Apart from this, there are the obvious and very well documented dangers of online paedophiles that try to trick our children into meeting them face-to-face without the protection of their parents or anyone else.

Firefox Private Browsing Parental Control – Safeguard Children from Online Dangers

The Internet is a wonderful resource for personal and business use but there is a bad side to it. What can you do to help protect your children? You should get some sort of filtering software installed on Kids’ computer. Here Firefox Private Browsing Parental Control is an excellent parental control which helps parents to monitor and control kids’ online activities by filtering web sites, recording Email sent and received, IM chats, websites visited, taking screenshot in real-time.
Email Monitoring

Record all emails sent and received with details, support web mail, email clients, Lotus and Exchange. Allow or block outgoing emails with filtering email address, subject, domain, attachment and email size.

Instant Message Monitoring

Record all instant messages sent and received by MSN/Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, QQ, ICQ, etc. Control sending IM files by name, and size. Backup sent IM files.

Website Visit Monitoring

Record all visited websites with HTML tile and URL. Support IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and many more browsers. And this Firefox Private Browsing Parental Control also can be used in many browsers such as IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and etc.

Some games connect to the Internet, which can allow children and adolescents to play online with unknown adults and peers.

time away from family time, school-work, and other hobbies

Parents can help their children enjoy these games and avoid problems by:

checking the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings to learn about the game’s content.

selecting appropriate games—both in content and level of development.

playing video games with their children to experience the game’s content.

setting clear rules about game content and playing time, both in and outside of your home.

strongly warning children about potential serious dangers of Internet contacts and relationships while playing games online.

set down strict gaming and internet rules. Monitor the sites your child uses and learn how to use Android Video Game Parental Control to keep kids safe from video game.

Android Video Game Parental Control

If parents are concerned that their child is spending too much time playing video games or appears preoccupied or obsessed with aggressive or violent video games, they should first set some limits (for example – playing the games for one hour after all homework is done) and try to encourage the child to participate in other activities.

If there is continued concern about their child’s behavior or the effects of video games, Android Video Game Parental Control is a necessary software for parents to install on kids’ computer to parental control them from video games. With this Android Video Game Parental Control, parents can know who your kids play with, how and when they play, and for how much time.
Instant messaging is real-time communication. It’s a blend of e-mail and chat (since you send one to someone and get real-time communication), but better. It’s also fast eclipsing e-mail as the most popular Internet communication tool. Instant messaging is much faster than the other ways of internet messaging like e-mails and proffers instant gratification to the user. Nowadays, instant messaging is a popular way of social interactions. Answering e-mails is time-consuming and it does not indicate whether the person you want to communicate with, is online or not. Instant messaging not only saves time and money, but also enables faster messaging and also maintains the natural flow of conversation. Instant messaging is one of the best ways available on the internet, for staying in touch with relatives and friends.
